A piano’s feel is as equally important as its sound. Whether you play your piano regularly or not, if it is not regulated, it may feel too light, too heavy, or uneven to the touch. For optimal functioning, each component of your instrument needs to be maintained regularly.
For example, fluctuations in temperature and humidity levels affect the tension of the piano’s strings. During dry seasons, wooden components lose moisture, making them shrink and if severe enough they can even crack. This explains why a piano should be tuned every six months, ideally with the changing of the seasons. This cycle of expansion and contraction doesn’t only lead to an uneven and out of tune sound. It also alters the responsiveness of the instrument’s playing mechanism, also known as the piano’s action. Our certified technicians know the inner workings of a piano like the back of their hand. When its action is misaligned, PianoCraft can easily bring the instrument back to tip-top shape through a process called piano regulation. We can make your piano sound good and feel good in no time. At PianoCraft, our team of experts always strives to exceed the expectations of our clients.
Piano Voicing is a highly technical process which requires experience and expertise. This is an over simplification, but basically the piano technician adjusts the varying hardness of the piano's hammers to make the sound more even and pleasing. Voicing may brighten the sound or soften the sound depending on what is needed for that particular piano and pianist. PianoCraft’s skilled technicians are highly trained in the art of piano voicing. We can assess the condition of the piano and determine what’s adversely affecting its tonal character. Throughout this process, we work closely with our clients to deliver their preferred sound, whether that means a brighter tone or a softer one.
A piano doesn’t have to sound bad to benefit from piano voicing services. When you want to improve the instrument’s tone quality, you can seek the services of a registered piano technician from PianoCraft.
Voicing purposefully changes the density of the felt hammers. To manipulate the hammer hardness, our skilled technicians may need to use needles of varying sizes, hardeners, along with several other methods. Ultimately, it depends on the kind of hammer the piano has and the desired result. PianoCraft's highly trained piano technicians will adjust the piano's levels based on the customers’ personal preferences..
Together, we can bring out the voice for your piano and your taste.
Maintaining a Consistent Environment for Your Piano
A piano must be housed in a controlled environment, ideally with a temperature between 68 to 76 degrees Fahrenheit and humidity levels at around 42%. Not only will this extend the life of the instrument, but it will also help your piano sound and play its best all year round. It’s quite difficult to maintain the ideal environment for the instrument, especially in Northern, Virginia where summers are usually warm and humid while winters are cold and dry.
To help protect your valuable piano in Virginia, a Damp Chaser Life Saver Climate Control system is what you need to manage the dramatic shifts in temperature and humidity. Of course, it’s still best to keep your piano away from direct sunlight, air vents, and fireplaces which are in use. While a Damp Chaser Life Saver Climate control system will not be as necessary for cities with perfectly consistent temperatures and humidity, they are of tremendous benefit in Northern Virginia.
Unsure of whether or not your piano's current environment is adversely affecting your piano?? PianoCraft’s expert technicians can test the current environment that it’s in. If you’ve already scheduled a piano tuning and piano service, all you have to do is ask our technicians when they drop by.
Julio came out and was friendly and professional, and really took his time figuring out how to bring my piano back up to snuff. He was extremely thorough and careful to make sure that everything was as good as it could be. I will definitely be calling him in the future.
Outstanding quality, selection, service; expert ownership and staff
Excellent. The technician checked the piano's workings, did minor cleaning, and tuned it (it had gone fairly far out of tune after two moves), and did an excellent job. The company also provided a written appraisal for insurance purposes. Great to work with in every respect.
